Surgical Dental Care
at Thomasville Dental Center
Oral surgery in dentistry is sometimes necessary to remove a tooth that is damaged beyond repair, correct problems with supporting bone or periodontal (gum) structures, or, to remove third molars (wisdom teeth) that are problematic. Thomasville dentist Dr. Alan Sanders has provided oral surgery services for his patients for over a decade.
For most patients, Dr. Sanders will provide dental surgical care in our office under local anesthesia or assisted by dental sedation. He may recommend the services of a dental specialist, an oral surgeon or periodontist, for patients with complex dental or medical needs.
Restoration vs. Tooth Extraction
In dentistry, our goal is to maintain functional teeth in a healthy state so they can support proper chewing and stabilize the bite. When possible, your dentist will repair a damaged tooth with a dental filling or crown, or, if the nerve has become damaged, he may recommend a root canal to save the tooth.
When a tooth hurts, it is only natural that a patient would request an extraction to make the pain stop, and many people believe the least expensive solution is an extraction. The fact is, however, that when a tooth is lost, surrounding teeth will move and shift into the open space, leading to more problems down the road. The cost of replacing a missing tooth with a dental bridge or dental implant and crown is often 2-3 times the cost of a root canal and crown procedure.
Regular dental examinations with necessary xrays are the best defense against tooth loss. During these visits, your dentist will look for early signs of problems and recommend conservative treatment options to help save your teeth and save money.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
The majority of adult patients will develop one or more wisdom teeth by their late teens or early twenties. Most people have problems with wisdom teeth because there is usually not enough room in the mouth for them. They are very difficult to keep clean and any infection or decay will eventually affect other teeth. Dr. Sanders has helped many patients with wisdom teeth extraction supported by dental sedation. He sometimes refers patients to an oral surgeon if necessary due to complex dental or medical needs.
Periodontal (gum) Surgery
Periodontal disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults. The destructive process of periodontal disease attacks gum tissue and the underlying bone that serve as the foundation for teeth. If detected early, periodontal disease can be treated with non-surgical treatment. In some cases, surgical procedures to remove infection or repair bone defects are required. Dr. Sanders may perform these procedures in our office or work with a periodontist (gum specialist) to restore oral health.
Dr. Sanders provides oral surgery procedures including tooth extractions, wisdom teeth extractions and periodontal surgery in our Thomasville dental office. Please Contact Us if you would like to schedule a dental surgery consultation.
